1 | 2 | Optional Author's Notes | Fanmix by [livejournal.com profile] queenofgoat

I don't usually write long author's notes, and this will be no different, but I do have a few things I want to say.

First off, if you haven't checked out [livejournal.com profile] queenofgoat's mix for this, GO DO IT RIGHT THIS SECOND. If you follow me on Tumblr or Twitter, then you saw me freaking out over how good it is and I really haven't stopped since the day I received it.

But let's talk about the fic itself. Because I kind of feel like I have to justify its existence.

It started when Chris Colfer twittered his love of the network formerly known as Sci-Fi's "Face Off." For those unaware, it's a reality show in which aspiring special makeup effects artists compete against each other in weekly challenges. The first season of it was amazing.

From there, my brain decided that clearly this called for an AU in which Kurt was a special make up effects artist, and I wanted to set it on Broadway instead of a movie set, which lead me to ponder what on earth kind of musical would require that much special effects makeup? Combine that with my recent mainlining of every Star Trek series I could get my hands on, both official and unofficial, and somehow my brain went, "SINGING AND DANCING KLINGONS!"

And thus, a Big Bang fic was born.

And then a funny thing happened as I was writing it. For a long time, I couldn't figure out why I was so sure that Kurt would be a special makeup effects artist if he couldn't be a performer, and then a re-watch of Glee season 1 later, I landed on, "Makeovers are like crack to me," and the way he treated Finn and realized that of course this would be Kurt's backup career. Throw in a re-watch of "World Enough and Time" and I hit the quote that shaped not only this fic, but also my entire perception of Kurt's character in canon--"I have found that I can tolerate being judged far better than being of no consequence." Despite the fact that Kurt and Spock couldn't be any more different if they tried, the quote rang true to the Kurt in my head perfectly.

I would like to formally and sincerely apologize for my abhorrent songwriting skills in part two; Darren Criss I am not, although I am kind of absurdly pleased that I worked in a reference to the title of Wesley's departure episode. I take my giggles where I can get them, folks.

I hope this fic was comprehensible to people who aren't familiar with Star Trek, as well as having some reference snickers for those who are. And hopefully I wasn't too heavy-handed with the Glee meta. My AUs tend to have that.

I hope it was enjoyable, or at the very least didn't make anyone want to run away at the thought of Worf doing the Bat'leth Boogie. You're a star if you made it through all of this ridiculousness, and I sincerely thank you for it.

P.S. The title of this fic came from a Captain Picard quote in 5x25, "The Inner Light." As Kamin, Picard tells his "daughter": "Seize the time, Meribor. Live now! Make now always the most precious time. Now will never come again." It seemed fitting.

I love long extra Author Notes, for the record. I just need comment on these because they brought up some things that I forgot to say after the fic. Broadway AUs/Future fics are hard. I haven't tried writing them yet, and I don't see myself writing them any time soon. (We'll see what season 3 brings.) I love reading them though.

The dancing Klingons and the @wilw tweets (I'm RL acquaintances with him, which made that entire section funnier.) the ridiculous 80s/90s hair... all of it just made this whole thing realer with it's silliness. I'm not sure how. The whole thing was just wonderful and true in that it didn't try to be anything it wasn't. And bring on the Meta. :)

Ha, thank you so much! And oh, I cringe to think at what Wil would think about this nonsense. Although I maintain that if they ever do a ST musical and Chris Colfer doesn't play Wesley Crusher, then this universe is unjust. :)

Since Wil's asked for fanfic about himself, he'd probably laugh. I don't think he knows or cares about Glee, though. (He just doesn't want any graphic sex with himself being written, which I totally understand. *eek*) I won't tell him about this, though.

Chris Colfer for the upcoming ST musical as Wesley, got it. Now, who to play his mom?

I actually had a debate with myself over whether or not writing that one fake tweet of Wil's counted as RPF and then just hoped no one would notice or ask because Wil is way too internet savvy for me to feel comfortable with it being there. Eh, maybe if he found this, he'd just be amused at my gentle Trek mocking and not, you know, creeped out. Thanks, though. I would freak out if I thought there was any chance of him actually finding it.

Actually, I always kind of pictured it as either Emma (for the hair) or Brittany, because she was quite good at spouting off those medical terms in that Braniacs episode this season.

Naw, not RPF. A shout-out, maybe.

I don't see Emma as being old enough to play Kurt's mother... and no way Brittany is. Maybe with make up. Actually, with the whole "dancing doctor" thing that they had going on with Dr. Crusher, Brittany would work... just dye her hair.

With the proper age makeup, Kurt could make either Brittany or Emma look old enough to be Wesley's mom. He's good at his job. :)

Your lyrics were amazingly hilarious, which was totally appropriate for this. A musical like this shouldn't be taking itself too seriously.

Ha, thanks. I actually ran them by a friend who just kind of shook her head at me. Oy.

I love authors notes! Especially long ones, because I love to hear about the origin and genesis of a good story. I know literally NOTHING about Star Trek other than there was a guy named Spock. He had pointy ears maybe? Yeah, no idea. But I LOVED this story. It made me laugh and I was rooting for Kurt the whole time, so hard core.

Aw, thank you! And Spock does indeed have pointy ears!

AHA! Score one for me! I am so lame, I have no idea what half this stuff is. Turns out for a LONG time I thought that Star Wars and Star Trek were the same thing. At least now I understand that they aren't...gosh I'm awesome ;)

Oh, gosh. Considering that on the whole, Star Wars and Star Trek fans dislike each other, it's a good thing that you know the difference now! Although to be fair, I've only been a Trekker for about two years--I saw the reboot film because I liked most of the cast and the next thing I knew I was mainlining all the TV series. And apparently this fic was my addled brain's way of dealing with that much new information. Heh.
