You ever come across one of those pairings that seems almost bordering on crack with how seemingly random it is, but you write it anyway, and then you start thinking about it and revisiting old canon and you realize how utterly fucking obvious it was and you should've seen it sooner and aren't you an idiot? Rob Corddry/Ed Helms was like that for me (minus the actual writing; I read a fic for that one), and so is my newest pairing love, Tydam. Tydam is Tyce Diorio + Adam Shankman all wrapped together in a big gay fluffball of dancer/choreographer love with a heaping helping of angst thrown in for good measure. They met in 1990 while dancing together at the Oscars for Paula Abdul and eighteen years later, Adam's a guest judge on SYTYCD and Tyce is a guest judge and regular choreographer for the show. And their love? Is kind of epic.
See, Adam always compliments Tyce on the routines he choreographs, but in 2008, Tyce did this routine for eventual winner Joshua and his partner Katee about finding love and reconnecting with someone who means the world to you. Adam then tells Tyce that it's the "best routine he's done all season," and Tyce gets this look on his face like, Yes, you got it. That was meant for you. He looks so shocked and blown away and almost...scared of the implications. Adam then goes on to say that "there's nothing more exciting than the perfect combination of two dancers and a choreographer and you guys just became like...the holy trinity of SYTYCD. So congratulations, that was awesome." And Tyce? Looks like he's ready to cry. It's the most precious thing. Turns out that icon I have of Adam (which I have had for almost a year now, btw. I made it while Rachael was here visiting in August of 2008) is actually Adam responding to that routine.
And the whole rest of the show, Adam is like...completely giddy, because obviously he knows he is going to have epic get-back-together sex at the end of the night. And Tyce? Isn't even on the episode that was filmed two days later. Clearly he is still in bed trying to recover, heh heh. And the next week when he's back to choreograph again? He looks SO HAPPY. And the routine he does is all giddy and bouncy and :-D! and you can just so tell that it's because he and Adam finally worked shit out. It's so cute.
First, let's do what I like to call my own "holy trinity" of SYTYCD. See, Tyce has choreographed three specific routines while Adam was on the show that are basically...the evolution of their relationship from, "I can't forgive you, we're over," moving into, "I can't get over you, I'm ready to forgive you, let's rekindle our relationship," and then into, "I can't keep my hands off of you. I love you so much." And Adam fanboys over Tyce while reacting to them. But even better? Tyce's face, man. Watch his face while Adam talks about the routines. It's just...my God, when Adam calls All By Myself "Awesome," Tyce looks ready to cry.
3x12 | "Apologize" | Danny & Anya
4x20 | "All By Myself" | Joshua & Katee
5x06 | "I Only Have Eyes for You" | Randi & Evan
Okay, now the rest of these are just in order because they're not part of the "holy trinity." Only one of them is really relevant to Tydam, and has the relevant quote noted after the video. They're all pretty cool dances, though, so check them out, anyway. :)
(Also of note is that these are not the only dances Tyce has ever done for the show, just the ones he's done for episodes Adam was guest judging.)

4x10 | "Beautiful People" | Chris & Comfort

And um...that's Tydam. Come over to the dark side. I have fic-cookies. :-D

3x12 | "Apologize" | Danny & Anya
Tyce: This week's contemporary routine is about a man and a woman...not a boy and a girl. In the song, he repeatedly says, "It's too late to apologize," and I think everybody kind of knows what that's like.
Now keep in mind that they have known each other for 18 years. Then watch that dance. There's so much PAIN in it. Like...my heart ACHES for Tyce when I watch that routine. I just have this image of him standing alone in a dance studio and that song comes on and he dances out his pain and that becomes the routine, and by the end, he's sobbing. Because it's just so...raw. Like I can feel it in my chest. Fuck, Tyce. What did he do to you, baby?
(Also, the "a man and a woman...not a boy and a girl," line is said with such...wistfulness and sadness that it makes me hurt. Like...there's such a loss of innocence in Tyce's eyes and ugh, he hurts me.)
Nigel: One: First of all, a note to the choreographers. It seems that every relationship, every contemporary routine we do ends in somebody walking away. I'd like the choreographers to know that some relationships do work.
Tyce: *lolzing in a "yeah, right" sort of way that hurts me*
Adam: By the way, by the way? Not when you're a dancer.
Nigel: I think you're talking crap.
Adam: Oh. Well, okay.
Tyce: *has a priceless look on his face like "ha, in your face. Rock on, Nigel"*
4x20 | "All By Myself" | Joshua & Katee
Tyce: This is more like a Romeo and Juliet, West Side story kind of thing. It's like an undying love between two people.
Joshua: Basically, we can't live without each other in the number.
Tyce: They're used to working with each other and they've always had a good chemistry, and so they just have to...rekindle.
It really doesn't hurt that this is danced by my all-time second favorite couple from this show, but MY GOD WATCH THAT and tell me that it doesn't SCREAM, "Please, we need each other. We have to work this out."
Adam: *clearly moved* Um. *covers mouth* Tyce, that's the best thing you've done all season.
Tyce's Face: ...you know what? I can't describe it. You just have to see it. If you watch no other of these videos, watch this one. Because Tyce looks like he's about to sob through the whole thing and Adam looks so moved that it hurts me.
Adam: There's nothing more exciting than the perfect combination of a pairing between two dancers and a choreographer and you guys just became like...the holy trinity of So You Think You Can Dance. So congratulations. That was AWESOME.
Tyce: *looks ready to weep*
(Note: On the full-sized higher quality version I have, it looks to me like there's a tear on Tyce's cheek. I don't think it shows up in the video, but here's a screencap. Thoughts?)
A Standing Ovation: *ensues*
5x06 | "I Only Have Eyes for You" | Randi & Evan
Tyce: With this, I really definitely want to see a style, a connection. And you know, the minute they look at each other and see each other, that's the most important moment. (To Randi and Evan.) That's the sensuality that we want. And go in. Don't think about what it looks like, only think about each other.
Evan: He wants us to have this love story. This very intimate thing.
Ugh, this dance. It's like...so fucking hot without being dirty. It's like this, "God, I love you and I can't keep my hands off of you," kind of thing and you just KNOW that whatever happened after "All By Myself," it was very, VERY good. :-D
Adam: And Tyce Diorio, that was was one of the best pieces you've ever done.
Tyce: *looks shocked* *mouths the words "Thank you," three times*
Okay, now the rest of these are just in order because they're not part of the "holy trinity." Only one of them is really relevant to Tydam, and has the relevant quote noted after the video. They're all pretty cool dances, though, so check them out, anyway. :)

3x18 | "A Wild Wild Party" | Pasha & Sabra
Of note is that Adam doesn't compliment the choreography on this one, which he usually does. Why? Well, it's just a few weeks after "Apologize," that's why. You shouldn't have broken Tyce's heart, Shankers.
4x10 | "Beautiful People" | Chris & Comfort
I have nothing to say about this one other than this was a few weeks before "All By Myself" and clearly Tyce and Adam were having desperate "we love each other but we can't make this work and it's pissing us off, so let's be angry at each other" sex to this song. *nods*
Also, I really like this routine, even though Chris and Comfort didn't do it justice. Can I see it with two different dancers, plz? No? Damn.
One more thing, Tyce's face while Adam talks about the choreography. Watch it. OH, TYCE.
4x23 | "The Garden" | Mark & Courtney
Okay, this one is NOT choreographed by Tyce. I included it for a very important reason. In the pre-dance part, Adam is introducing the piece and he says:
Adam: This piece is like the last eight years of my dating life. So I'm--I'm not understanding about that.
Cat: You've never worn a costume like that, I hope.
Adam: That's--that's between you and me later.
Now watch the video. THAT'S his dating life? It's like a fight-fuck-love-angst thing and YEAH. What the hell has been going on between you and Tyce, Adam? Jesus Christ. That piece is so fucking dark.
5x06 | "Hot Honey Rag" | Vitolio & Asuka
1) I can't hear the phrase "per se" without bursting into giggles. Thanks, Matt and Trey.
2) Watch Adam's face when he critiques it. He clearly hates the choreography but is too nice to say anything.
3) Later in this same episode was "I Only Have Eyes For You," though, so clearly they're going to be all right. They'll have angry sex about Adam not liking the routine and then go back to being happy. Hee. :-D
