I've seen other people doing this, a sort of..."detailed notes" on their vid, so I thought I should give it a try. Perhaps it will help me to pay closer attention and it'll help me notice things more as I "beta" my vids.
Um, I guess I should start with song choice.
I knew I wanted to do a Silas/Megan vid, but as we all know, I have appaling taste in music. I happened to be listening to this song on repeat when I was starting to design the vid in my head, and the more I thought about it, the more I liked it. The idea was that "Ooooh, I want you, I don't know if I need you, but oooh, I'd die to find out" was supposed to be referencing how far Silas went to try to keep Megan. It doesn't fit 100% perfectly; I'll be the first to admit that, but the more I thought about it, the more I decided that it was the song for me.
Mkay, the opening sequence.
I realized straight off that there was no way I could stick to the lyrics word-for-word because...well, how am I gonna vid lyrics like Your crystal mind and magenta feelings take up shelter in the base of my spine, sweet like a chic a cherry cola?
There's just no way to be literal about that.
So I decided to use the first verse to show that first interaction.
I wanted to use the entire scene uneditted, but unfortunately, it was too long, so I had to do some major shortening and a fade in or two, but still, I like the way it turned out.
I think I showed Silas's early faux-cockiness, and the way Megan puts him in his place immediately.
Now, we come to the hallway scene. This is actually my favorite part, where he's watching her, because I feel like this is the closest I came to matching the lyrics, and also, it's kinda sweet.
Now, the "fantasy" sequence.
I wasn't actually intending for it to be a fantasy sequence, but then I realized how too fucking PERFECT it would be, and I just had to do it.
I love when he snaps back from the fantasy and sees that she's watching him and the embarassed look--I swear, it's just too perfect right there, you really do believe that he just had that fantasy.
I sort of jumped ahead from that point into their relationship, what with the next few scenes being them having sex and all. But I felt like Megan's teasing in the scene before was enough of a thing to let you know that they were headed in that direction.
The fade-in after that, on the pregnancy test was not my doing, by the way. It was the first scene after the opening credits, and it faded in from black, but I really loved the way that thing works out. You see them having sex, the lyrics say "I want you" and then suddenly it goes dark, and fades in somberly on a pregnancy test. Then it cuts to them on the bed and Megan crying, which I thought let people know that the test was positive.
I was debating on leaving the next scene in--the part where you hear Silas say Megan's pregnant and they're keeping it--because I thought that Megan crying in the previous scene showed that, but in the end, I felt it was a good thing to have right there at the bridge when there were no lyrics in the song, and besides, there's always that random person who doesn't infer things well who wouldn't have gotten it otherwise.
From there I started using a lot of the footage from the most recent episode, where Megan was awkward around Silas, where Silas kept sending her enthusiastic texts about baby names, and how sad she was. By this point, for me, anyway, the song was sort of background noise, and even though there was no dialoge on the video other than the one line about the baby, I felt like it was really speaking for itself, like it was telling the story, and the music was there just to keep your ears entertained. It's not often I do a video like that--I'm usually a stick-to-the-lyrics-and-the-beat kind of vidder, but this one had a carefully constructed story that I had to tell whether the song cooperated or not.
The last time it says "Oooh, I'd die to find out..." in my head, when Megan looks at him from inside the house...she knows. And again, the lyric references how far Silas went to try to keep her.
Which leads me to the last shot, just as the music is fading out, him poking the hole in the condom.
I put the footage in sepia tone because it felt...
Like that part needed to stand out some how, which I felt the sepia did.
And um...I think that's it for my first attempt at this detailed notes thing. Heh.
