He said that he gave Alan Ball like this three page character history that he wrote, along with some storylines for Sam that he suggested, and he said he's not even sure that Alan read it, but that Sam searching for his family was one of them, but he said that probably would've happened anyway.
He also asked me (during my initial two minutes with him) if I'd heard about the casting spoilers for his long-lost brother, and I said I had, and Sam said that he'd just read about it, because he has to find out stuff like that through publications rather than "behind the scenes" because they don't tell him things like that.
